Hauling a shark onboard is tricky business, even if it is a juvenile. Courtesy of the Library of Congress.

McNutley found himself the center of attention as news of the discovery spread along the shore. Everyone, land lovers and fishermen alike, seemed to have an opinion about the origin of the thumb. But among the seafaring community, the consensus was that the fabric was from a merchant marine uniform.

Charles McNutley continued coming to the shore for many more years to go fishing. Although he caught large stripers, sea bass and even a tuna, he never again caught a shark.

The identity of the thumb’s owner was never discovered, so we can only assume that somewhere there was a merchant marine sailor who was missing his left thumb. Of the shark, we only know that its last meal included a human digit.
